Full-time (37 hours per week) Public Health Consultant contract to start ASAP until 31-05-22 with a possible extension.

What is the Job?

  • Will have responsibility for the management of COVID-19.
  • Contribute strategically to the development and maintenance of effective systems for the surveillance of COVID-19.
  • Proactively use COVID-19 surveillance outputs to inform and influence the local actions, policies and strategies.
  • Influence, and where appropriate, lead the development and implementation of a system wide response to COVID-19.
  • Employ highly effective communication, negotiation and influencing skills to enable stakeholder relationships to deliver objectives.
  • Deal with complex and conflicting subject matter problems.
  • Escalating any issues/pressures for resolution with the Director of Public Health.
  • To be a visible, positive leader and role model. Meeting and demonstrating high professional standards.
  • Ensure compliance with all confidentiality and governance requirements at all times.
  • Lead and contribute to proactive and responsive media issues.
  • Proactively contribute to wider organisational development.
  • Contribute strategically to the development of the Public Health team business continuity plans.
  • Be expected to take on the line management of staff.
  • The above is only an outline of the tasks, responsibilities and outcomes required of the role. You will carry out any other duties as may reasonably be required by your line manager.

What are the requirements?

1. Inclusion in the GMC Full and Specialist Register with a license to practice/GDC Specialist List (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview) or Inclusion in the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview)
2. If included in the GMC Specialist Register/GDC Specialist List in a specialty other than public health medicine/dental public health, candidates must have equivalent training and/or appropriate experience of public health practice
3. Able to both lead teams and to able to contribute effectively in teams led by junior colleagues
4. Experience as a consultant working on communicable disease control in a wide variety of settings including out of hours on call.
5. Experience of working with other agencies
6. Understanding of key agencies involved in health protection
7. Understanding of social and political environment
8. Strategic thinker with proven leadership skills
9. Adaptable to situations, can communicate with people of all capabilities and attitudes
10. Ability to respond appropriately in unplanned and unforeseen circumstances
11. Understanding of epidemiology and statistics
12. Excellent oral and written communication skills (including dealing with the public and the media)
13. Able to influence senior members including Councillors and Directors
14. Project management
